Apple's rumored new upgrade program has sparked concern among consumers, and for good reason. While the company has yet to make an official announcement, a Bloomberg report suggests that the iPhone Upgrade Program will be replaced by a leasing contract that mirrors car lease agreements. This shift could potentially trap users in a cycle of recurring upgrades, leading to higher lifetime costs and a loss of ownership.
The key issue lies in the way these leasing contracts work. Unlike the current iPhone Upgrade Program, where users pay off the total cost of the device over 24 months and own it outright, the new program would only cover the depreciation of the product during the lease period. This means that at the end of the lease, users would either have to return the device or pay a balloon payment representing the difference between the depreciation and the full cost.
The problem is that most people don't set aside an additional monthly sum to make the balloon payment. As a result, they would be forced to upgrade every two years for an iPhone or three years for a Mac, essentially trapped in a recurring cycle where they will never truly own the product. This raises a deeper question: is Apple prioritizing its bottom line over consumer choice and ownership?
One might argue that lower monthly payments will make Apple products more accessible. However, the potential for higher lifetime costs and the loss of ownership control outweighs this benefit. Apple could offer the choice of programs, allowing consumers to take advantage of the credit while still retaining control over how often they upgrade.
